A very interesting medallion from Sweden. The portrait is of Emund, or Edmund, the Old. Emund was the king of Sweden from 1050-1060 A.D. Emund was also called Emund Slemme, slemme meaning “bad”. His reputation as a difficult ruler and one that chose to follow different paths than the prior legendary kings of Sweden is what probably led to his short rule.
The medallion is beautiful. There is wear on the highpoints but the fields are actually prooflike and the patina is a deep pewter color. A very attractive Viking portrait makes this a really cool medallion for someone who collects Swedish numismatics or someone who likes Viking history.
